Taking its name from its largest occupant, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University City is full of college spirit, lively pubs, and Saturday football crowds. But it’s home to more than just a vibrant student population.
 
More than 20 regional offices for Fortune 500 companies are located here, as is University Research Park, one of the state’s largest research parks. The PNC Music Pavilion is the site of large outdoor concerts, and the LYNX Blue Line light rail extension makes for quick travel to points throughout the city.
 
There are over 3,200 apartments in University City and an estimated population of more than 160,000 within its borders. But the area is not entirely urban: Reedy Creek Nature Center and Preserve features a collection of shady trails and paths, and an expansive golf course is also situated here.

Retail is abundant in University City. The Shoppes at University Place is an open-air retail complex featuring shops and restaurants with lake views. The Wine Vault—a quaint bar offering a range of vintages that is perfect for date night or a girls’ get-together—is also found here. University City is also home to the first (and only) Ikea in the Carolinas, which opened in 2009, and Topgolf opened here in 2020.
 

Things to Do

University City is home to the University City Wine Festival, held each spring to benefit the University and Sugar Creek libraries. Every Saturday during football season, the city comes alive with pride for the UNC Charlotte 49er Athletics. The PNC Music Pavilion, an outdoor amphitheater specializing in hosting large concerts, also packs the area. Looking to unwind? Reedy Creek Park, an 18-hole disc golf course stretching 4,974 feet with wooded fairways and creeks, is a good place to play.
