5 Things to Do in Charlotte to Celebrate Black History Month

It's well known that the city of Charlotte is loaded with plenty of things to see and do. As we enter Black History Month and the remainder of the year, we suggest doing these five things to help you and those around you celebrate and honor black history. Whether you have just relocated to Charlotte or were born and raised in Queen City, this list will help guide you through Charlotte's black history and culture.

1. Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts & Culture

Named after Charlotte's first African-American mayor, the Gantt Center is Charlotte's hub for African-American art, history, and culture. The four-story building takes you through four decades of African and African-American culture and serves as a focal point of music, dance, theatre and so much more. Throughout February and beyond, you can find plenty of exciting events for everyone in the family. Honor the legacy of southern black culture with a tasty dining experience, or settle in for a night of classic black cinema

2. Levine Museum of the New South

The Levine Museum prides itself on building a stronger and more equitable community. The museum connects the past to the future to highlight the potential of a new south. Many exhibits at the Levin Museum have highlighted African-American history. Learn about the growth and chances of Charlotte's neighborhoods as well as the rise and fall of Brooklyn, once one of Charlotte's most thriving black communities, with Brooklyn: Once a city within a city, and so much more.

3. Black History Month: Sip & Paint (R&B Edition)

BBQ, music, and a paintbrush are the combo that you didn't know you needed. Every Thursday and Friday you can head over to Bobbee O's BBQ in the Northlake area for a night of good eating, drinks, and painting! Your $15 ticket includes everything you need to paint your masterpiece, a raffle ticket, and a vacation voucher! This event would be great for a date night or even a time out with your friends. Groups of four can save money with a group ticket for $50. Get your tickets at Eventbrite ASAP.

4. African-American Heritage Festival - Feb. 26

Charlotte's Museum of History is hosting its annual African-American Heritage Festival on Feb. 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Enjoy an afternoon of live music, dance performances, author talks, and free admission to the museum's latest exhibit, "A Better Life for their Children: Julien Rosenwald, Booker T. Washington, and the 4,978 Schools that Changed America". This is a great event that everyone in the family can enjoy and learn from.

5. Eat at Black-Owned Businesses

Who doesn't love a good bite to eat? Charlotte is loaded with tons of delicious places to indulge at and its black-owned restaurants are some of, if not the, best places to do so. Check out this list by Charlotte Magazine which features 25 black-owned restaurants and dessert shops. There's something for everyone and you're sure to leave full and satisfied.
